Birth story...

I've been wanting to post this for a while, before I forget, but just haven't had the chance. With visitors every day but one since he was born and TWO boys to take care of I've barely had a chance to eat and sleep, let alone blog. I hope you enjoyed the pictures in the meantime...

As I had mentioned several times we had an appointment on Sunday at 9:15 to start an induction. I was really hoping to avoid it but had resigned myself to the fact that it was probably going to happen. Anyway Bob and I got up Sunday morning and as I had been doing for the past couple weeks we went for a walk. I decided that we would do 3 laps instead of 2 just in case it'd get something started. We got home and did a few things around the house to get ready for visitors (Nanny and Pappy were coming to watch Oliver when we went to the hospital). I put Oliver down for his nap at about 1 and then I went to lay down too. I had the first contraction at 1:08 - I remember because I was about to fall asleep. The next one came shortly thereafter but I thought it was no big deal. This had been happening on and off for days and it never amounted to anything. Actually all the other times were in the middle of the night, but whatever. So I had two contractions before I fell asleep, thinking that if this was it then I'd need the rest and if it wasn't then I'd wake up with no contractions and go ahead with the scheduled induction. When I woke up about an hour later I was still having contractions. Not strong ones, but strong enough to let me know something was going on. An hour and a half later they were a bit stronger so I started timing them. I got a notebook and wrote down the time, the length and the amount of time between. From the time I started this they were all less than 10 minutes apart. The doctors all said not to call until they were a steady 5 minutes apart so I sat on my birthing ball and tried to rest and relax as much as possible. At this point it still wasn't very painful, just enough to make me stop what I was doing for the 30-45 seconds each one lasted. Bob and Dolly showed up around 8 or so and we hung out for a while. Bob put Oliver to bed and then it was almost time for my appointment at the hospital. We got the bag and headed out...

We got to the hospital and told them I had an appointment for induction but that I probably wouldn't need it because I was already in labor. She said to have a seat, there were two people before me. Nice!! We sat down to wait. They finished with the first person but then had to wait for a translator to come for the second person (not sure why she couldn't have just checked me in while she was waiting). The translator came and they finally finished with the other woman. Then the receptionist decided that chatting with the translator (yes CHATTING - we could hear pieces of their conversation) was more important than helping the poor woman who was, by this point, quite uncomfortable. Anyway, she finally called us over and had a bunch of papers for us to sign - one set of which was in Spanish. Before she could explain what the papers were or what anything was something started printing on her printer. She left us there (with full knowledge that I was in labor) to call every extension in the hospital to find out WHO printed to her printer because she can't do her work if they are printing to her printer! I read the paperwork as best I could and signed and initialed where I thought I needed to. She finally came back and looked over the paperwork. She started entering everything into the computer and then she noticed that I had initialed that I didn't want to be in the directory. Apparently this means that you don't want anyone to know you are there and if someone calls for you they have to say you aren't there. I had already initialed it and at that point I didn't care I just wanted to get into a private room so I could get this show on the road. We told her go ahead with it - which took another 10 minutes of paperwork and the giving of a "code name". Then she noticed I didn't sign the other papers (the Spanish ones) and asked me why. Probably because I DON'T UNDERSTAND SPANISH!! We got that straight, finished up the paperwork and she said to have a seat someone would be down to get us in about 10 minutes. "Dr. Dillard is the doctor on call tonight so she'll be attending to you" she said.(remember that, it's important!!) We waited 15 minutes in the waiting room before Bob got fed up and asked her to call again. About 10 minutes later they came to get us and took us to our room.

Once we were in the room a very chipper nurse came in and hooked up the IV and all the monitors. She asked me a million questions (between contractions, which were a steady 5 or less minutes apart and lasting between 45 seconds and a minute) and then she said it was time for her to get off duty. Nice! Another nurse came in, Katie, and said she'd be taking care of me for the rest of the night. She seemed very young! Anyway, she asked if there was anything she could do to make me more comfortable and I asked for a birthing ball and to not be offered any medication. She checked my dilation and said it was at 3. She was totally cool! I labored in the bed for a while but it was very uncomfortable to lay down when I was having a contraction. At some point my mom and sister came in (they came from Asheville) and hung around for a while and we chatted a bit. When things really got going they went to the waiting room and I got on the ball. Oh!!! What a better way to labor!! The bed was miserable and the ball made it seem less painful. I just rocked through the contractions, Bob supporting me from behind. What a great help Bob was, throughout the whole thing. He would hold my hand through each contraction and it was such a comfort. After a while I started feeling the urge to push a little bit. I told Katie and she had me get back on the bed to check the dilation. She said I was at 7. (an hour before she had checked and I was at 5). She said things were progressing pretty well and that she'd go ahead and call the doctor in so she could break the water and get things moving along a bit faster. I was totally ok with this. She came back and said she wasn't able to get ahold of the dr but that she'd keep trying. She left again and came back a bit later to let me know that the doctor the receptionist had said was on call was not the right one! The one on call was, of course, the only doctor in the practice that I hadn't met. Katie said she'd be there in 15 minutes and she'd break my water then. She left again, not sure why at that point, and a few minutes later (2 contractions) my water broke on it's own. Bob called the nurse and she got Katie to come back in and get the table with all the instruments on it ready. At this point I was really feeling like pushing and was starting to feel the burning sensation that comes when the baby moves way down and is READY to come out. The doctor showed up a few minutes later and checked me out - said that I was moving along nicely and to go ahead and push when I felt like it. 13 minutes after the doctor got there Wyatt was born. The last part Bob kept telling me to look at him but I couldn't. I don't know why but I was focusing on the whiteboard with the "how much pain are you in" faces on it. Once he was born they suctioned his nose and stuff and plopped him right on my tummy. Bob said I was trying to grab him but I don't remember that. I do remember looking down and seeing his head before he was all the way out. I rubbed him with the towels they wrapped him in to help get some of the goo off and told him how wonderful and beautiful and perfect he was. I think Bob was laughing at me! Anyway, after a few minutes they took him away to weigh him and do the Apgar thing and all that. The doctor repaired my tear - just a small one, smaller than the episiotomy I got last time. I told Bob to go hang with Wyatt so he wouldn't think we'd just dumped him into the cold cruel world so he went over and gave me the play by play of his check. I got very very cold! After she stitched me up the doctor got some heated blankets and covered me up then they brought Wyatt over so I could try to feed him. He did so well latching on! They let me feed him for about 15 minutes or so then they took him to the nursery to get him cleaned up the rest of the way and dressed. Bob went to the nursery with him so Katie packed up all my stuff and helped me get to our room. Katie was a super wonderful nurse!!! She told me there's no way she was ever doing that without any meds, but that I did a super job. hehehe, thanks!

When we got to the new room Mom and Rachael came back in for a few minutes to get the details then they went back to the hotel. Bob came back after a while and we got a little sleep before they brought Wyatt back in. The nurses did come in a few times in between to check my temp and blood pressure and all that. Needless to say we didn't get much sleep that night! Anyway, that's the story of Wyatt!

Wyatt update

Wyatt had his visit from the Guilford County health nurse today. He weighs 7 pounds 11 ounces!! Which means he weighs more now than he did when he was born. (he left the hospital at 7lbs 5 oz). The nurse said I don't have to wake him at night to feed him every 3 hours now. I'm so relieved! He's really hard to wake up. She said everything looks good and we are doing very well.

We go to the pediatrician next week sometime (tuesday? thursday?) for his first visit there. I can't wait to see how much weight he will have gained by then!

holding little brother...

Oliver woke up in such a good mood (after he woke up at 5:30 and went back to bed at 7 finally!!). We got up and played for a while, just the two of us. Then he went to wake Daddy up for breakfast and he saw Wyatt sleeping there. He wanted to "take him!!" so Bob sat him up and put Wyatt in his lap. He was very proud of himself!

He pointed out some of Wyatt's body parts and then his...here is "knee"

Here is the smooch, which was kind of akward but they both survived it. Oliver was very sweet and gentle when he was holding Wyatt.
My big boy is growing up! I'm so proud of him!!

(Bob is cropped out of the pictures because he was not properly attired for internet)

The playmat...

Wyatt played on the playmat for the first time yesterday. He did really well! He liked the little monkey...

and he turned his head side to side a few times.

Oliver wanted to play, too. He was gentle and behaved pretty well for the most part.

Today is the day!!

Today is Roy's due date. I'm hoping he'll come on out today. We made plans for the whole day and I'm scheduled to work so maybe he'll decide to come "ruin" our plans.

We're finally getting the carpets cleaned. They need it so bad...and have ever since we moved in. We're also making a Costco run to get some of the stuff I've been craving but can't have and so we have food on hand when all the visitors come.

How spiffy does he look?!

Sarah, this is one of the shirts you got him. Doesn't he look super handsome?! I rolled the sleeves up the way Bob does it. hehe!

He likes to sit on the porch in the evening and throw rocks at the tree. This was just after we'd gotten home from dinner with friends so that's why he's "dressed up".

4 days to go...

Well I had another NST and dr's appointment today. The NST was not as good as they usually are. Roy was asleep for the first 15 or 20 minutes and then after they made me drink a ton of water and fed me some crackers he woke up for a little bit and then went BACK TO SLEEP. I guess they weren't concerned because they sent me on my merry way home until my appointment (weirdly enough the NST was at 1 and the app was at 2:30). I got home and everyone was in bed so I slipped into bed too, thinking I could just rest for a while. Luckily Bob woke up at 2:20 and got us all up and ready for the appointment...I wasn't even late! The midwife I saw today said my sugar readings were good and so was my blood pressure, etc etc. She checked my cervix and said it was soft and dilated 2cm, but that it didn't mean much because it was only 2cm. I asked about the induction process and such and they said they'd call me back tomorrow with a plan.

I ate something spicy for lunch and took a long walk this evening. Hopefully Roy will be here tomorrow!!!!

sleeping through the night!

We switched Oliver to one nap a day just after lunch. Since we did it he has consistently slept through the night from about 8 until 5:30 then from 5:45 until somewhere between 7 and 8. I have to admit that Bob was right, he only needs one nap.

Oh yeah, and only one more week until Roy's due date!!!

How do I know?...Well, I'll tell you.

Today Oliver and I were getting ready for our morning walk. We got some breakfast, got dressed, put our shoes and hats on and got ready to walk out the door when I realized I didn't know where the stroller was. I ran out to the car for a second (the door to the house was open) and found it. I got it out and set it up. I walked back up and tried to open the screen door...but it was LOCKED! When the boy figured out how to lock it I don't know. Anyway, I tried pulling on it really hard, I went to the back door to see if I could get in that way (it was locked and for some reason I don't have a key!), I came back around and yanked on the door for another minute before I decided that it might scare Oliver since he was standing right inside the door looking at me like I was completely nuts. As I stood there trying to decide if I should run to the neighbor's house to call Bob (since my phone was inside) Oliver reached up all calm and unlocked the door. Needless to say I snatched the door open and grabbed the boy in a big hug and told him never ever do that again because he SCARED ME!! I don't know if he understood but he hugged me for a loooong time and said he was sorry. Well, now I know better than to go outside and leave him in by himself...even if it's only for a second.

The best picture Bob got...

Rachael and Dave, here is Oliver in outfit Dave got in China. It looks super cool on him! I'll try to get some better pictures later, Bob didn't use the flash and Oliver kept moving around. He was even trying some karate moves when he had it on...hehehe!

Oliver loves to draw...

Oliver is very artistic and loves to draw. Unfortunately there's really not a good place for him to do it because the only real chair we have for him is the high chair. He usually draws while I mess around on the computer so he'd be in the kitchen and I'd be in the office and that just wouldn't work.
This looks really akward and I have no idea why he drew for so very long if he had to stand like this to do it. He did, though. We got quite a few pictures.

He's always very intent when he's drawing, too. Look at that face! This time he was using a pen but usually I give him some crayons...the big chunky kind. He's getting pretty good at knowing some colors, although he still mixes up blue and green.

Last night Bob put this desk back together for him. The neighbor was going to throw it away a while back and we asked if we could have it. Bob painted the top of the desk with whiteboard paint but it didn't turn out very well. I'm not sure why but it's all bumpy. Anyway, Oliver really likes it. He keeps going in there and sitting at the desk asking for Crayons.

He even figured out where to put the crayons so they don't roll off the desk. What a smart boy!

He's also started bringing all his books to the desk so he can read them properly. Go figure! I think he likes having his own place. It's super cute!

He doesn't even look the same anymore! (that's still his favorite giraffe though)

Praying?

It certainly looks like it. I hope he's praying that his brother comes out soon!!

Two more weeks!

I had a dr's appointment yesterday. The NST was fabulous, as usual. The dr I saw looked over my sugar readings and said she wants me to go on insulin for the rest of the time. Only once a day, right before bed. Of course, I'm not too happy about it so I asked if I could have until Monday to get my diet under control. NO MORE CHEATING! Super strict diet again. She said that's fine, a few days won't make too much of a difference. She said I need to test 4 times a day again. That sucks!

So anyway, I've been trying to figure out how to get this child OUT before Monday. I've walked almost 2 miles each of the past two days. (I walked until I couldn't walk anymore) I ate spicy chili for dinner last night. I'm going to try doing a little yoga today to see if that helps, maybe bounce on the birthing ball. I've been sitting with my legs uncrossed...that's really hard for me. Anyone have any other suggestions on how to get this kid out?!?!?!?!!?

Oh yeah, she also said they won't let me go past my due date. She said I should pick which doc I want to induce me if I get close to the date. Yippee! One more reason to get him out sooner rather than later!

chores?

When I was a kid we didn't really have assigned chores. We did the dishes sometimes or cleaned up our room or swept...a few things here and there. Bob and I were talking last night and decided it would be good for Oliver to have chores. Then we started discussing what he already does. The list was very long - I was pretty suprised!

Here it is:

Feed the dog (twice a day)
Put away shoes
Put dirty dishes on the kitchen counter or table
Put away his clean clothes
Pick up toys in the playroom
Clean up spills/messes - as long as they are small
sweep (although he doesn't actually clean anything this way he LOVES to sweep)
dust (he gets more cleaning done, and he loves the swiffer!)
Throw away junk mail...or any other scrap of paper he can find...or wrappers from food...or any trash, really.

I guess for a two year old that's a pretty good list. He's really helpful in other ways, too. He gets diapers when he needs them, picks out and (mostly) puts on his clothes, and washes himself in the bath. Hopefully all this helpfulness will continue when Roy is born and I NEEEEEED all the help.

He's a good boy!!

new tactic...

Oliver has had a fit lately when it comes to going potty. I don't know if it's because it cuts into his playtime or if he's just sick of sitting in one place or if the new wore off and now it's just a chore but he screams bloody murder any time I try to take him. I've tried everything! I tried more toys, less toys, books, flash cards, songs...everything!

Well, now I'm trying something new. Oliver loves stickers. I have a shoebox full of stickers that I don't use for anything. So now every time he goes potty he gets to pick a sticker out of the box. This has worked a few times, but still doesn't work every time. I guess it's better than nothing. Especially if I can get him to poop on the potty ...poo filled cloth diapers are no fun! I've only been doing this for two days so maybe he'll catch on to the "sticker for pee" soon and will do it every time.
